OUR LEGENDS CORNER: Momar Njie

Momar Njie is a former Gambian professional soccer player, Born on 26 August 1975 in the capital city of Banjul (Hopkinson Street). Momar is a soccer defender.

Born to Gambian parents and the third of four siblings, Abu njie been the elder. Momar’s father hailed from Chamen in the north bank region, and later relocated to German leaving the siblings with their Aunt at Dobson street. Momar and his siblings later joined their father in German. Momar left for German at a very tender age. Momar is also the nephew to the legendary referee the late Abdoulie Njie or Ablie Njie.

However, Momar started his senior footballing career with Tennis Borussia Berlin II in 1998, a German football club competing in the NOFV-Oberliga Nord,a fifth tier of the German football league system. He spent 4 years with the club and featured in 38 league games therein. In 2000-2001 he played for the first team of Tennis Borussia Berlin and featured in 7 league games therein.

In Jul 1, 2001 he signed for Kremser SC on free transfer in the 2001-2002 season, an Austrian association football club competing in the Austrian 2. Landesliga. unfortunately he did not feature for the club.

Momar left the club in Jul 1, 2002 to join SV Horn,an Austrian association football club competing in the Austrian Football Second League on a free transfer.

In Jul 1, 2003 Momar returned to German to join Borussia Fulda, a German soccer club competing in the Hessenliga league on a free transfer. He feature in 6 league games before leaving the club in Jul 1, 2004.

Momar switched clubs again to join SV Yeşilyurt in 2004, an German football club competing in the Oberliga Nordost Nord before been Dissolved in 2007. He made 11 league games appearances there in.

He Switched clubs again in Jan 1, 2005 joining SV Tasmania Berlin a German club competing the NOFV-Oberliga Nord a fifth tier of the German football league system. He Featured in 16 league games therein.

Momar moved again in Jul 1, 2005 to join German club Füchse Berlin, competing in the Berlin-Liga. He featured in 15 league games. Momar swithed clubs again and joined BFC Preussen a sixth tier German clab competing in the Berlin Liga from Jan 1,2006 till 2008. He featured in 65 league games scoring 4 goals therein.

The last club that Momar joined was Hilalspor Berlin on Jul 1, 2008, a sixth tier club competing in the Berlin Liga. He was without a club by Jan 1, 2011 when he eventually hanged his boots.

On national level, Momar was called up 4 times to feature for the scorpions but feature in only 2 games. his debut for the Gambia was in 2003. and on 10/7/06 he featured against Algeria where Gambia triumphed over Algeria by 1:0 .and on 2/7/07 he featured in his second in a friendly against Luxembourg which ended 2:1

Momar is currently the co-trainer of Berlin-Liga side SV Tasmania Berlin.
