The Gambia National Women’s Scorpions have arrived safely in Sierra Leone ahead of the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Zone A Women’s Football tournament. The team and delegation jetted into Freetown on Monday 24th February 2020 in the afternoon hours before proceeding to its Group B base in Makeni.
Speaking from their hotel base in Makeni in the Eastern Region, GFF Executive Committee member and Head of delegation Ms Sainabou Cham said the team arrived safely at their base without hitches. “We were received by Officials of WAFU and accompanied to our hotel. It is a comfortable place and we are really happy with the accommodation“.
The team is scheduled to have their first free up session on Tuesday 25th February at the Makeni City Stadium at 14:00hrs the same time the Gambia and Mali opens their account for the tournament opener slated for Wednesday 26th February 2020. The tournament kicks off from the 25th February to 7th March 2020 at two of Sierra Leone’s biggest cities of Bo and Makeni.
Earlier on, Head Coach Mariama Bom Sowe noted that her charges are ready for the challenge and expected to do well at the tournament “because our opponents are not new to us”. The Gambia is pitted in Group B with Guinea Bissau, Mali and Liberia and as such Coach Bom Sowe said she is aware of the task that lies ahead of the Gambia. “It is a challenge ahead of us but we are also prepared because Guinea Bissau and Mali are now good teams and we respect them. We are training very hard for the tournament and i have gathered the best players from the League”.
She thanked the GFF for the opportunity given to the Senior National Team to take part in the tournament. “The talents are here and we can do it and i want to thank the GFF for the confidence they have in us and that is why we will do everything possible to perform well“, she noted.
