Real Madrid ‘preparing bid for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly’ as they look to sign long-term replacement for captain Sergio Ramos

Real Madrid are set to make an offer for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, according to reports.

The Senegalese defender is one of the most sought-after defenders in world football and is on the radar of the majority of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for him in the past and Barcelona and Manchester City are also said to be keen.

However, it seems Real Madrid are at the front of the queue with reports in Spain, via Italian outlet Calciomercato, claiming they see him as a long-term replacement for Sergio Ramos.

Ramos is now 33 years old and his current contract at the Bernabeu expires in the summer of 2021.

Napoli chief Aurelio De Laurentiis has said before that he wouldn’t sell for anything less than £90million, meaning Real Madrid would have to spend big to get their man.

Even since signing Harry Maguire in the summer, United have been looking at bringing in a central defensive partner for him. Victor Lindelof has performed well alongside Maguire but there is a desire to add another top-level centre half.

Koulibaly has been one of the most consistent performers in Europe and continues to impress at the heart of the Napoli defence.

He recently caught the eye when the Italian side earned a point against Liverpool in their Champions League group game.

They will surely face stiff competition from both Barcelona and Manchester City for his signature though.

City are short in the heart of defence and the departure of Vincent Kompany has left a gaping hole in their backline.

He is also comfortable with the ball at his feet – something Pep Guardiola seeks in his defenders. Barcelona have also shown interest in the 28-year-old before and will see his experience as invaluable.
