Wilde Lake soccer’s Ousman Touray Lift It Late To Clinch Maryland titles

At this time last year, Ousman was the leading scorer on the Wildecats’ junior varsity team. On Saturday, he was the hero in the Class 3A state championship game. Touray scored with 7:38 left in overtime to lift the Wildecats to a 1-0 win over two-time defending champion C. Milton Wright for the program’s eighth state crown and first since 1997.

Touray emerged as the Wildecats’ go-to player this season, finishing with a Howard County-high 23 goals to go with four assists. He was at his best in the state tournament, scoring the tying and winning goals in a 2-1 win over rival Mount Hebron in the semifinals on Nov. 9.

For the second year in a row, the Whitman Vikings spent the entirety of the fall at the top of these rankings because, for the second year in a row, they went undefeated against local competition and won a Maryland 4A title.

The Vikings methodically wore down a vaunted Leonardtown offense in Saturday night’s final, tallying all three goals off set pieces.

“Once we settled in and started moving the ball around, I just thought we were brilliant,” Coach Dave Greene said afterward. “I would’ve liked to have scored a goal in the run of play there, but I think we’ve scored 15 goals off set pieces all season, so that didn’t surprise me at all.”

Wilde Lake’s Ousman Touray reacts by taking his shirt off and celebrating with teammates,

Earlier in the day, Wilde Lake had played a much more dramatic championship, defeating C. Milton Wright 1-0 in an overtime ended with a golden goal.

“We knew that we were destined to be in this spot,” Coach Trevor Shea said. “We have done enough things in the last few years to put ourselves in this position.”
