Stefan Kuntz Wants Bakery Jatta To Join Germany’s U21 National Team

Bakery Jatta have been under the spotlight recently with the alleged identity scandal as claimed by a journalist in Germany. These allegations prompted clubs to appeal to the FA for matches he played against them.

The German authorities subsequently looked into the matter, coming to the conclusion that Jatta actually is Jatta.

Now that the unpleasantness around the Sport Bild story is subsiding, there’s more good news for HSV and their star midfielder. Germany U21 coach Stefan Kuntz wants Gambian-born Jatta to become a German citizen. Kuntz told Sport1:

“I would like to help Bakery to gain citizenship, because I would like to convince him to play for the U21s. We were on our way to doing so, but then this unspeakably bad story broke.”

Jatta is currently 21 years old and therefore could potentially participate in Germany’s qualifying campaign for the U21 EUROs in 2021. Furthermore, he could also be part of Kuntz’s squad for the Olympics in 2020. The Germany U21 coach is allowed to nominate players under the age of 23 as well as three players who are older than 23.

Kuntz says that he wants to convince the next DFB president about the importance of securing Jatta’s services:

“Given that this topic is through now, I’ll wait until the next president is elected. Afterwards I’ll sit in his office asking if we want to do everything possible to convince Bakery about joining us.”

Jatta has become a regular at HSV. With his speed, he has a weapon on the pitch, which is always a problem for every opponent. Jatta is hard to stop. His behaviour is also impressive when a duel or ball is lost.

The word defeat simply does not exist in Jatta’s vocabulary. His hit at the 1: 3 Cup defeat in the 2019/20 season, won the goal of seasons by the fans. Also with his teammates he is extremely popular. Lewis Holtby even invented a very special nickname for him. “He’s from Gambia. And an antelope is also very fast and lanky.

Emotional hit: The fans of Hamburger SV have chosen the 3-0 of Bakery Jatta to the goal of the month.

That’s why I call him Gambilope. How he can march and how fast he is: If I were his opponent and he always comes back to me, that’s insanity. He is doing us really well.

In the spring of 2019 Jatta signed a new HSV contract. While he initially earned about 100,000 euros per season, his annual salary is now over 400,000 euros. This makes Jatta still one of HSV’s “low earners”. For him it is an incredible amount of money. A good monthly salary in his native Gambia is about 80 euros for comparison.

Due to its quality on the football field, other clubs have long been aware of him. Jatta is popular and in demand. A real fairytale, which should continue for a long time at HSV. His contract in Volkspark runs until 2023.
