Cape Verde Continue WAFU Plate Fairytale After Triumph Over Gambia

Cape Verde have booked their place in the WAFU Plate final after beating the Gambia 1-0 on Tuesday at the Stade Lat Dior.

Paulo Norta hammered home the only goal on 32nd minute when he profited from keeper Ebrima Jarju’s howler to give his team a memorable victory and a place in Saturday’s final.

Omar Sise’s Scorpions started very well in Thiés, dominating the early proceedings and they came close to taking the lead after seven minutes when Momodou Bojang’s glancing header at the back post was parried away by goalkeeper Kevin Sousa.

The keeper was again called to actions, producing another fine save midway through the the first half to deny Gènèration Foot maestro Bun Sanneh whose freekick from outside the box was destined for the bottom.

Paulo Norta volleyed in the breakthrough against the run of play in the 32nd minutes to hand the Blue Sharks the advantage.

Gambia goalkeeper Ebrima Jarju’s howler when he twice failed deal with an inswing cross allowed the unmarked Norta to fire into the top corner.

The Gambia pushed for the equalizer and they came close to levelling the score 18 minutes from time, Cape Verde attacker Harnani Cardoso headed Bun Sanneh’s free kick over his goal to keeper his side in the lead. 

With fresh legs the Scorpions continued their dominance but failed to find the much needed goal as Cape Verde held on to see out the remaining minutes of the game. 

The Islanders will play the winner between Guinea and Liberia in Saturday’s final at the Stade Lat Dior in Thiés, Senegal.
