Watford signs former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck

Watford have completed the signing of Danny Welbeck on a free transfer with the former Arsenal striker signing a three-year deal with the FA Cup finalists. The 28-year-old endured an injury-ravaged five-year spell at Arsenal and was allowed to leave at the end of his contract in June, paving the way for a move to Vicarage Road.

Welbeck scored five times in 14 matches for Arsenal last season before suffering a season-ending ankle injury against Sporting Lisbon in a Europa League clash in November. The England international joined Arsenal from Manchester United for £16m in 2014 and scored 32 goals for the club in 126 appearances in all competitions.

Welbeck’s time in north London was beset by injury problems, though, as he missed a total of 113 matches for the club over the past five seasons, suffering from two serious knee injuries as well as a broken ankle last term. Prior to his spell at Arsenal, Welbeck netted 29 times in 142 matches for Manchester United, helping the club win the Premier League title in 2012-13. He will compete with club captain Troy Deeney, Andre Gray and Gerard Deulofeu for a place in Javi Gracia’s attack next season.
