AFCON 2019: Ivory Coast And Morocco Set-off Campaign with A Winning Start

Both the Atlas Lions of Morocco and the Elephants of Ivory Coast set off Afcon 2019 campaign with winning start. Namibia’s Kiemuine 89th minutes own goal gave the Atlas Lions of Morocco all 3 points against the Brave Warriors of Namibia.

Morocco were Africa cup of nation winners in 1976, and also the first african nation to win a group in the Fifa world cup group stage in 1986.They finished ahead of Portugal,Poland and England. Morocco has managed a record 17 appearance in the Africa cup of nations. Morocco qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, making it their first time in 20 years.

The elephants were Africa cup of nations winners in 1992 after beating Ghana on penalties at the Stade Leopold Senghor in Dakar, Senegal. Their second triumph was in came in the 2015 edition, again defeating Ghana on penalties at the Estadio de Bata in Bata, Equatorial Guinea. The team has qualified for three consecutive FIFA World Cups between 2006 and 2014, but has never advanced beyond the group stage.

The Brave Warriors were at the verge of settling for a draw but they weren’t lucky enough as Kiemuine’s 89th minutes own goal dented it. The Elephants managed a narrow win over the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in group B dubbed the group of death.

The bafana bafana were able to put the the Elephants at bay until the 64th minutes when the deadlock was broken as Pepe’s assist was buried by Kodjia to give the elephants the much deserved lead.

Bafana Bafana next game will be against their southern counterpart, the brave Warriors of Namibia while Ivory coast will be against Morocco on Friday.
